Campfire Stick Bread Twists with Garlic Parmesan Butter

Jump to recipe
Quick answer

Stir a quick baking-powder dough, roll it into thin ropes and wrap them around clean peeled sticks. Toast over hot coals (not tall flames) for 8 to 12 minutes, turning often, until golden and cooked through. Brush with garlic Parmesan butter and eat warm; the whole thing takes about 40 minutes.

As much as we try, we're not food photographers. This is an illustrative image for context. We don't have real photos for every recipe. Cooked this one? Send us your photo and we'll credit you.

Stick bread is about as old-school as campfire food gets. This version uses a no-yeast dough you mix in one bowl, so there's no rising and no waiting. The twists come off the stick crisp outside and soft inside, like a breadstick with a little smoke.

The trick is thin dough and steady coals. Thick dough burns before it cooks. Keep the ropes about as wide as your finger, turn the sticks often and the bread comes out right every time. Bring extra dough. It goes fast.
