Recipe & Outdoor Safety Disclaimer
Last updated: October 23, 2026
Cooking outdoors is part of the fun — and it comes with real risks. Recipes on TrailFed are for general information. You are responsible for cooking safely. Please read this before you light anything.
Fire and fuel
- Check fire restrictions first. Campfire and stove rules change with conditions and burn bans. Follow the rules of the land manager (for example the U.S. Forest Service, BLM, National Park Service, state parks, or your local authority) and any posted restrictions.
- Never use a campfire, charcoal, or fuel-burning stove or heater inside a tent, vehicle, camper shell or enclosed space — carbon monoxide can kill.
- Use stoves and fuel exactly as the manufacturer directs. Keep a way to put out fire (water, shovel) nearby and fully drown and stir fires until cold before you leave.
- Cast iron, Dutch ovens, foil packets and coals get extremely hot. Use heat-proof gloves and tools, and keep kids and pets clear.
Food safety
- Cook meat and seafood to safe internal temperatures and use a thermometer: poultry 165°F (74°C), ground meats 160°F (71°C), whole cuts of beef, pork and lamb 145°F (63°C) with a 3-minute rest, fish 145°F (63°C).
- Keep cold food at 40°F (4°C) or below. Don’t leave perishable food out more than 2 hours (1 hour above 90°F / 32°C).
- Keep raw meat separate, wash hands (or sanitize when water is scarce), and treat or boil water you’re unsure about.
- Cooking times on TrailFed are estimates. Altitude, wind, cold, fuel and gear all change how long food takes.
Allergies and diets
Always check every ingredient against your own allergies and dietary needs, and read product labels. Diet tags (such as vegetarian or gluten-free) are a guide, not a guarantee. TrailFed does not provide nutrition information.
Wildlife and Leave No Trace
Store food and scented items as required where you camp (bear canisters, lockers or hangs). Pack out all trash and food scraps, and follow Leave No Trace principles.
AI-assisted recipes and community content
Some recipes are drafted with the help of AI tools and reviewed by our editors before publishing. Community recipes, reviews and ideas come from other campers. We can’t test every recipe, so use your judgment, and if something looks wrong, tell us at hello@gorilladirt.com.
