Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 23, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how TrailFed / Gorilla Dirt LLC (“TrailFed,” “we,” “us”) collects, uses and shares personal information when you use trailfed.com and related services (the “Service”). We are based in California, USA, and we serve campers around the world. Questions? Email hello@gorilladirt.com.

The short version

  • We collect what we need to run the site: your account details, what you post, and basic technical data.
  • We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
  • We use only the cookies the site needs to work. No ad trackers.
  • Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your full card number.
  • You can download or delete your data anytime from My Camp, or by emailing us.

1. Information we collect

Information you give us

  • Account: username, email address, display name, password (stored hashed), and optional profile details like a bio or website.
  • Crew membership: your membership status and Stripe customer and subscription IDs. Stripe collects your payment details directly.
  • What you post: reviews, star ratings, comments, “how could this be better” ideas, recipes, Trail Notes and photos. Photos may contain metadata (such as location) unless your device removes it; we re-encode photos on upload, which strips most metadata.
  • Email signup: your email address and confirmation status for our weekly recipe email.
  • Messages: anything you send us by email.

Information collected automatically

  • Technical data: IP address, browser type, device type, pages requested and timestamps, recorded in standard server and security logs by our hosting and security providers.
  • Cookies: see Section 6.
  • Comment anti-spam: when you post a review, WordPress stores your IP address and browser user-agent with it to help fight spam.

We do not knowingly collect sensitive personal information (such as health, financial account, precise geolocation or government ID data) and we ask you not to include it in anything you post.

2. How we use information

  • To provide the Service: accounts, saved recipes, ratings, reviews and recipe submissions (contract / providing the service you asked for).
  • To run Crew memberships: billing through Stripe, access to Crew-only recipes, renewal and cancellation notices (contract; legal obligation).
  • To send emails you asked for: new-recipe alerts for Crew members and the weekly recipe email (consent; you can unsubscribe anytime).
  • To credit contributors: showing your display name on recipes, photos and adopted ideas you contributed (contract; your choice to contribute).
  • To keep the Service safe: preventing spam, fraud and abuse, and enforcing our Terms of Use (legitimate interests).
  • To improve the Service: understanding which recipes and features are useful (legitimate interests).
  • To meet legal obligations: tax, accounting and responding to lawful requests.

We do not use your personal information to make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you based solely on automated processing.

3. AI tools

We use artificial-intelligence services (such as Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI) to help draft, format, categorize and review recipe content. Editors review AI-assisted recipes before publication. Recipe content you submit may be processed by these providers to help us review or categorize it. We do not send your account details, email address or payment information to AI providers.

4. How we share information

We share personal information only with service providers that help us run the Service, under contracts that limit how they can use it:

  • Hosting and security: Kinsta (hosting on Google Cloud) and Cloudflare (content delivery and security).
  • Payments: Stripe, which processes Crew payments under its own privacy policy.
  • Email delivery: the provider we use to send account and newsletter emails.
  • AI services: as described in Section 3.
  • Avatars: if you post a review, a hashed version of your email address may be sent to Gravatar (Automattic) to show your profile picture.

We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect our rights or the safety of others, or as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets (you would be notified). Content you post publicly, such as reviews, recipes, photos and your display name, is visible to anyone.

No sale or sharing: We have not sold or “shared” (for cross-context behavioral advertising) personal information in the past 12 months, and we do not do so, including for users under 16. We honor Global Privacy Control browser signals as an opt-out request should that ever change.

5. How long we keep information

  • Account data: while your account is active, and up to 30 days after you ask us to delete it (backups roll off within 90 days).
  • Payment and tax records: as long as the law requires (typically 7 years). These are held mostly by Stripe.
  • Published contributions: until you or we remove them. If you delete your account, we remove or anonymize your name on what you posted unless you ask us to remove the content itself.
  • Server and security logs: generally 30 days or less.
  • Newsletter: until you unsubscribe. Unconfirmed signups are deleted periodically.

6. Cookies

We use only cookies that are necessary for the site to work. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

  • wordpress_logged_in_*, wordpress_sec_*, wordpress_test_cookie: keep you signed in (session or up to 14 days).
  • tfc_voter: a random ID so a guest’s star rating can be updated instead of counted twice (2 years; contains no personal details).
  • comment_author_*: remembers your name and email for reviews, only if you tick the box (1 year).
  • Stripe sets its own cookies on its checkout pages for fraud prevention.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser; signing in and some features may stop working. Browser “Do Not Track” signals: because we do not track you across other sites, we do not change our practices in response to them.

7. Your rights and choices

Everyone: you can view and edit your account details, download your data or delete your account from My Camp, unsubscribe from any email using its link, and turn off new-recipe alerts in My Camp.

California residents (CCPA/CPRA): you have the right to know what personal information we collect, use and disclose; to access and get a copy of it; to correct it; to delete it; to opt out of its sale or sharing (we do neither); to limit the use of sensitive personal information (we don’t collect it); and not to be discriminated against for using these rights. In the past 12 months we collected identifiers (such as name, email and IP address), commercial information (Crew membership), internet activity (pages viewed on our site), and user-generated content, from you and your devices, for the purposes in Section 2, and disclosed them to the service providers in Section 4 for business purposes. You or an authorized agent can make a request by using the tools in My Camp or emailing hello@gorilladirt.com. We will verify your request by confirming access to your account email. We respond within 45 days. Under California’s “Shine the Light” law, we do not share personal information with third parties for their own direct marketing.

EEA, UK and Switzerland: TrailFed / Gorilla Dirt LLC is the controller of your personal data. Our legal bases are listed in Section 2. You have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict and port your data, to object to processing based on legitimate interests, and to withdraw consent at any time. You may also complain to your local data protection authority. We will respond within one month.

Other countries: wherever you live, you can contact us to access, correct or delete your information, and we will honor the rights your local law gives you.

8. International transfers

We are based in the United States and our providers may process data in the U.S. and other countries. When we transfer personal data from the EEA, UK or Switzerland, we rely on safeguards such as the EU Standard Contractual Clauses (and UK Addendum) or our providers’ certification under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.

9. Security

We use encryption in transit (HTTPS), hashed passwords, access controls and reputable providers. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password. If a breach affects your personal information, we will notify you as the law requires.

10. Children

The Service is not directed to children under 13 and you must be at least 16 to create an account. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA/UK). If you believe a child has given us personal information, email hello@gorilladirt.com and we will delete it.

11. Changes

We will post changes here and update the date above. If changes are significant, we will notify you by email or on the site before they take effect.
